Notes from the SDOA meeting on May 2 - 2pm @country Style Donuts (7 people in attendance)
We discussed some details of a meeting that Brendan and Arlene had with the Director of Leisure & Community Services for Whitchurch-Stouffville, including potential sites and amenities for the dog park. Town Council has asked the Director to formulate a report for an off leash dog park as there has been interest expressed in the community. He stressed that the Town is looking to work collaboratively with a dog owners' user group, much like they deal with soccer clubs for soccer fields etc.. He will be submitting his report to Town Council in mid-June and we are planning to meet with him again in the next few weeks to work out some details. It was a very positive meeting and we were very impressed with the level of cooperation. There are a few sites he is assessing but the most likely is a 1-1/2 acre site just south of Walmart.
We also discussed the need for people to get in touch with their local councillors (and those that are running in the upcoming election) to express our desire to have an off-leash park in Whitchurch Stouffville and find out if their councillors are supportive of the idea. A list of ward boundaries, as well as existing councillors and those running in the next election, can be found on the Town's website www.townofws.com/election.asp. We presently have about 125 online signatures and approx. 100 signatures on paper petitions.
There are a few people who have stepped forward to say that they would like to form part of the core working group to help in this cause. We would really like to have a couple of other people to help out and to bring their strengths to the table. If you can help out, please contact Brendan O'Sullivan via the website at www.stouffvilledogoa.proboards.com
No specific date has yet been set for our next meeting as we would like to wait until after we have met again with the Director of Leisure & Comm. Services, however, it was discussed that a weekday evening meeting may work better for people's schedules vs. doing it on a weekend. When a meeting date is set, we will post it on the website.
