Thank you everyone who has signed the petition and more importantly for registering here to be a member of the SDOA.
After the article came out we have had an increased profile even if the story was not completely to my liking, I sent the following note to the editor:
I appreciate the Sun-Tribune looking at the dog park issue and bringing the Stouffville Dog Owners Association to the attention of your readers. I was however disappointed that the story mainly focused on the dog park issue as a contentious election issue.
When interviewed, I clearly stated that I was hoping a group of dog owners could work with the town on various issues which included promoting responsible dog ownership, licensing, spaying/neutering programs, fund raising for local shelters, as well as an off-leash dog park. None of this made it into the story and I was misquoted on what did. When discussing projected spending I said ‘I hear about arts, hobbies and every sport getting funding, then pointed specifically to skate parks and the talk of adding a curling facility only and that I expect there are more dog owners than curlers in Stouffville. I did not mention the arts buildings and town hall, though your story seems to indicate I oppose such spending, which I do not. I was only asking that some planning and a small fraction of the spending go towards an area for dog’s and their owners.

I also called the talked at length with the Mayor Wayne Emmerson, who is awaiting a report from Town staff regarding the possibility or an off leash park and he says he is onboard. In the past he has not been onboard, but I believe this had to do more with a very bad experience for a family member in an off leash rather than being opposed to dog issues.
I have been asked a great deal about where I want the park, what kind of park will it be, what the rules I have in mind etc….
I started the SDOA in a hope that we could meet and discuss these issues rather than one person approaching the Town. I am, therefore suggesting that we meet briefly on Sunday April 11, 2010 and informally discuss any questions or ideas anyone has and then plan a more formal meeting. In addition, we could probably organize a group walk or trip to an off leash area, for those that would like to add that. I also need help getting more flyers up throughout Whitchurch Stouffville which I can bring on Sunday. Maybe we can meet at the Coffee Time on Main Street?
I will e-mail those who have registered and hopefully we can start to have this take some shape.
